On September 15, 2011, I had the privilege of attending Canada’s first #140Conference. The event was organized by The 140ConfONT Committee, a team of amazing volunteers and sponsors that worked their tails off to bring Jeff Pulver’s dream to Canada. The idea behind the 140 Conference is to show the why and not just the what behind Social Media. It is about using the power of online mediums for positivity and a movement towards a better world.
I was joined by many other Social Media fans at The Tannery Events Centre in Kitchener, Ontario to hear the stories of some of Canada’s most amazing and inspirational people that I have ever met. The focus of this conference was to hear real life experiences on how platforms like Twitter, Facebook and blogging are changing lives and changing the way we do business for the better.
Before the #140ConfONT I had never been to a conference where I actually laughed so hard that I snorted, and was so moved that I cried in public! I felt honoured to be in the same room with such greatness of people like Jeff Pulver @jeffpulver, Dee Brun @cocktaildeeva, Chris Eh Young @chris_eh_young, Neil Hedley @neilhedley, Craig Silva @bigdaddykreativ, Scott Stratton @unmarketing and Laurel Crossley @optimom. Just to name a few! There were so many others; but I can not possibly name them all.
If you would like to check out the rest of the speakers go here http://ont2011.140conf.com/kw-speakers.
One thing that I really liked about this conference was that in this room we were all just people sharing stories. We were all just people connecting, listening and engaging. Labels and social status had no meaning here. This conference really made me think about why I use social media. Social media is an amazing tool. I will continue to use it to positively effect change. One simple statement can change someone’s life, so why not make it count?
If you have an opportunity to go to a #14oConf I encourage you to go!
